7-9 May 2012 - PMI Global Congress 2012 EMEA. Presentation by Dr. Margery Mayer and Yan Bello: Leading Cross Cultural Teams in Today’s Global Marketplace.

Dr. Margery Mayer and Yan Bello have been selected and invited by PMI to present their paper/conference: “Leading Cross Cultural Teams in Today’s Global Marketplace” at the PMI Global Congress 2012—EMEA being delivered in Marseilles, France from 7-9 May 2012.

Presentation abstract:
Today’s business is global, many companies have locations around the world and others use resellers, partners, consultants or subcontractors to deliver products and services wherever needed. In all cases being able to communicate effectively and in the manner expected at each location is critical and often overlooked. There is a natural assumption that if one is a good communicator he will be equally as successful when communicating with people from another country and culture. Communicating without sensitivity to another country’s culture, norms and values often leads to misunderstandings, frustration, and a lack of motivation. How do you learn to communicate across cultures? How do you create value and synergies across distances? This paper provides insights into best practices from global operations, consultants and project leaders gathered from personal interviews.

Presenters' Bio: Dr. Margery Mayer has a PhD in Leadership and Organization and focuses on global operations. She makes sure that communications are clear so that the organization can operate successfully. Dr. Mayer is the COO of Enabledware, a global SaaS software company that delivers video to a screens, computers and Smartphone’s. 2012 World Appreciative Inquiry Conference. Poster presentation by Yan Bello: Appreciative Storytelling: Crafting Generative Conversations that Create Shared Meaning and Visions

Yan Bello has been invited to deliver a poster presentation about Appreciative Storytelling: Crafting Generative Conversations that Create Shared Meaning and Visions in the 2012 WAIC (World Appreciative Inquiry Conference) taking place in the lovely city of Ghent, Belgium from April 25-28th 2012.

Abstract Summary: Appreciative Storytelling: Crafting Generative Conversations that Create Shared Meaning and Visions by Yan Bello.

In today’s knowledge-based economy, experience-based information plays a critical role in most projects, business and societal decisions affecting success. In countless situations, the chances of success strongly depend on effectively tapping people’s implicit knowledge and experience to generate the appropriate motivation and attitude to sustain a culture of organizational performance and achieve project goals. To address these challenges, many organizations are relying on exploiting and cultivating organizational conversations and dialogues that foster creativity, innovation and participation. Discover an effective conversational-appreciative communication approach based on successfully combining Appreciative Inquiry with the ancient art of Storytelling to generate deep social/informal learning in projects, organizations and communities. Using appreciative storytelling as a collaborative search to identify and understand strengths and greatest potentials is experienced and reframed as an effective “how-to” way to co-create project visions, shared language/understanding around better practices, richer concepts and metaphors of success to create deep generative connections.

07.31.11 - Quality Magazine, July-September 2011, includes the article by Yan Bello: Creating performance, empowerment and innovation capacity, through the integrated management of processes and people with People CMM®.

Spanish Quality Association (AEC)
Quality Magazine ("Revista Calidad") dedicates its July - September 2011 number to the "Process Management: a [new] way to organize, manage and leader the organization"

The "Calidad" magazine in this number includes the article "Creating performance, empowerment and innovation capacity, through the integrated management of processes and people with People CMM®" by Yan Bello.

The process management is considered by many one of the most valuable approaches for designing and managing the modern organizations and their information systems. With an integrating character, the process management emerges of the exhaustive consolidation of disciplines that share the belief that an "approach focused in processes" lead to substantial improvements, in the performance as well as in the system consistency. Thereby, we do not surprise that among the several organizational factors or "components", in the process management -besides, of course, the processes- there are the systems, resources and used methods, people with their roles and responsibilities, that they can/should have in these processes, organizational units and/or interested groups (clients, suppliers, etc.), the organizational culture, among others. Even this, with frequency, people -or the "human factor"- appears late or in advance implementation phases of the process management.

In this article we continue our tour though the People Capability Maturity Model® (People CMM®) -see July/September 2010 of the "Calidad" magazine -studying in depth its contribution as a guide for the organizational evolution to higher levels of effectiveness and performance, including an approach based in processes that are connected to people through their competencies.

"Calidad" is a publication of the Spanish Quality Association, entity without profit that supports the responsible debate of every idea to quality improvement, with different authors´ opinions that not necessary are the same of the AEC, besides informs about the AEC activities.

New Edition from the Project Management Institute (PMI). October 2010
THE VIRTUAL EDGE (2nd Edition) by Margery Mayer, PhD
Embracing Technology for Distributed Project Team Success.

Since the publication of the 1st edition (1998) many things have changed at the technological and cultural level that make nowadays, the distributed and virtual teams an inescapable reality. In this new edition, a detailed understanding of the success factors in global teams is provided, including a deep study about how these factors affect current project leadership and management practices. According to the author, the best way of discovering and sharing this information has been to conduct a research, interviewing -small, medium and big- organizations & company leaders that manage virtual teams. The result of these interviews presents "better practices" for leading virtual, global and /or distributed teams & projects that can be applied in the current global business environment.

In SpaceMinds we are proud of being selected as a success case and give thanks to Dr. Margery Mayer for including us in the book. Besides, the article "'The Making Of' the New Spanish (Castilian) Edition of the PMBOK® Guide" presented by Bello in the PMI Global Congress (Madrid, 2006) constitutes the book´s only appendix.

Spanish Quality Association (AEC)
Quality Magazine ("Revista Calidad") dedicate its August - September 2010 number to the "Leadership and the Management Skills"

Nowadays it is practically impossible find a professional that do not know about the called "management skills", and that do not attribute a lot of important in the organizational management field. Just considering the volume of information and publications (books, magazines / articles, webs, etc.) as well as the wide training / event offers relating with these skills, to eliminate any doubt about the interest and "popularity" that they have in these times.

A Quest to Organizational Effectiveness & Successful Execution: Synergies between People CMM®, CMMI® and Project Management Best Practices

Last June 28th, Yan Bello taught the Workshop/Tutorial "A Quest to Organizational Effectiveness & Successful Execution: Synergies between People CMM®, CMMI® and Project Management Best Practices" in the SEPG 2010 Europe Conference (Porto, Portugal), organized by Carnegie Mellon University-SEI en collaboration with the Engineering School of Porto University.

In his intensive workshop, Yan Bello provided a global vision of some current standards and better modern practices of Project Management. The program helped the participants to consider / think about the project success beyond their "individual boundaries", from organizational perspectives relying on People CMM concepts and practices together with improvement initiatives based on CMMI (mainly CMMI-DEV, CMMI for Development). This rich approach of multi-model improvement is the result of researchers of "long travel", thanks in part to our participation in the development / validation of some of the standards and models mentioned before; as well as our solid experiences implementing organizational improvement projects, effectiveness and execution capacity in clients during more than a decade using CMMI and People CMM; and other models and better practices of project management.

01.19.10 - Article 'Appreciative Inquiry (AI): Participation and dialogues to generate sustainable positive changes' published in "Capital Humano" Magazine.

The article, written by Yan Bello, includes two valuable contributions: “A Shared View on Change Management for Human Resources" by Marta Morell, HR Director of Mutua Universal (Barcelona, SPAIN) and “The Power of Appreciation" by Stephen J. Miller, Learning & Development Manager at Novo Nordisk (Clayton, USA). (Published in Spanish).

A summary follows in English: At the start of each year, numerous change and renewal initiatives are planned and kicked-off, both at the individual-/personal- as well as at the organizational levels. Although it is unavoidable to get excited about these news, it is a well-known fact that to achieve lasting changes much more is required than just 'good hopes'.

Successfully dealing with one of the most evasive - and sometimes even subtle - challenges; which is to generate sustainable changes; is one of our key interest. Being an intrinsic part of people's and companies' vital experience, not only it has become "fashionable", but change management is nowadays one of the disciplines more influential and demanded in business practice.

Change continues to be one of the more discussed topics in management literature and executive training. Many studies, articles, books and programs approach change from different perspectives, providing diverse conclusions, better practices, tools, models and methodologies. The scope of what it is known today as 'change management' is so important that many management disciplines (leadership, coaching, professional & organizational development...) almost have their raison d'être in establishing and maintaining sustainable changes.
