Tutorial description

In today’s globalized economies, the value of “best-practices” to improve business performance is a frequently debated proposition. And as the recent financial/economical crisis is demonstrating, in a global “flat” world, serious negative risks can emerge from a lack of systemic understanding of our organizations actions and initiatives. In such a way that what can be seen as an “innovative” product or service (or way of doing, e.g. practice) in the short term, can become a major business-impediment in the longer term. No surprise then that the quest for superior performance should come together with an urge to make our approaches to business success “sustainable”. Or in systemic terms, that business excellence or superior performance must last in time.

In this context, several management models have approached continuous improvement of business performance from different, though complementary angles. In this presentation we explore and share how the SEI capability maturity models: People CMM and CMMI for Development, can be effectively used together with the EFQM Excellence Model in great “harmony” to provide organizations with an integrated roadmap that can help sustain their improvement initiatives in these turbulent times, while responding to different stakeholder groups’ expectations. The synergies between these models are significant, not just in term of focus and scope of their “best practices”, but also in the recognition their successful adoption can provide for companies and organizations.

The EFQM Excellence Model is a framework for assessing, developing and improving organisational management systems, promoted by the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) and designed for assisting organisations in their quest of being more competitive. Over the last decade, EFQM has become quite popular and known, especially in the European region, where numerous organizations are using it or has adopted it. The EFQM Excellence Awards recognize superior performing organizations and has contributed to the increased interest in the model; together with similar “quality awards” issued by national bodies of EU member countries, it is difficult to find a manager in Europe who haven’t heard about EFQM. The foundational concepts of excellence are discussed and how they provide a framework for launching a culture of excellence and continuous improvement in an organization of any size and sector. Several aspects of the EFQM Model are discussed from the perspective of People CMM and CMMI for Development, showing how these two models can complement the areas where the EFQM Model doesn’t provide detailed guidance. Some of the approaches that companies are using to exploit these synergies are presented; explaining why they have decided to invest in People CMM.

The People CMM® is presented as a roadmap for implementing workforce practices that continuously improve the capability of an organization's workforce. Pointing out and discussing the main process areas of People CMM® that can leverage the quest of organizational excellence (with emphasis on EFQM Model’s Leadership and People criterion as enablers of organizational performance). The ways in which several People CMM practices can support and even accelerate CMMI for Development implementations and adoption are also discussed. How some CMMI for Development process areas can support and provide effective vehicles to improve organizational performance from EFQM Model’s Process criterion perspective is described. From another angle, we look at how some EFQM Excellence Model elements can provide People CMM/CMMI improvement initiatives with additional opportunities for business alignment and positive organizational impact, completing this way a “multi-dimensional” multi-model cross-reference.

The presentation will put especial emphasis on discussing the typical risks and challenges faced during the whole organizational / process improvement lifecycle, from gaining executive support to dealing with resistance during implementation and measuring progress. Several specific examples are presented to illustrate some approaches that have proved successful in dealing with these risks.

The “business-case” for a multi-model improvement approach is discussed, including considerations of the diversity of the stakeholders involved, as well as what they imply for awareness, impact and recognition (consider for instance the results of a Google.com Search for People CMM: 328.000 hits; EFQM: 1.200.000; CMMI: 2.060.000 approx. on Nov. 14th, 2008). These ideas will be shared from each model’s perspective, allowing participants from different “backgrounds” to see the value proposition of the “other side” models.

Finally, a roadmap/approach to create and implement sustainable superior business performance is presented integrating EFQM and People CMM/CMMI. Participants will be able to learn practical ways to increase their organizations’ support and interest for these improvement programs from the perspective of their benefits of a sustainable competitive business advantage, external benchmarks and recognition. Of great value are the experiences shared on organizational change management challenges and the most adequate techniques to deal with them. Especially, when the joint-implementation of some of these models will take us to the diverse ground of other professionals in the organization, frequently requiring close communication and collaboration from areas which not necessarily have been closed enough in the past (e.g. software/system engineering, human resources, social responsibility or corporate communications, etc.).

Without doubts, this presentation will be thought-provoking for most participants. Taking them in a journey from the current short-term pressing issues of modern organizations to the strategic and holistic views that systemic management models (such as EFQM Excellence model, People CMM and CMMI for Development) can provide. Additionally, it will hint some ideas to encourage advanced use of these models. All discussions will be enriched from the author’s international, multi-sector experience with clients and organizations using these models. In summary, participants will benefit from condensed knowledge/experiences with a clear roadmap for guiding their own organizations to Perform at a Higher Level.
